Apple has officially introduced its new iPhone 18 Pro lineup, bringing several major upgrades to performance, photography and battery life. While the overall design remains familiar, Apple has made important changes inside the phone, particularly to the camera system and processor.
The new lineup includes the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while Apple is also introducing the new iPhone Duo, a foldable device aimed at users looking for a different smartphone experience.
Familiar Design With New Details
At first glance, the iPhone 18 Pro looks similar to the previous generation. Apple continues to use aluminum for the main body, helping the phone manage heat while maintaining a premium finish.
The company has also introduced new color choices, including a burgundy shade, glacier blue, black and silver.
Another noticeable change is the smaller Dynamic Island. The screen sizes remain at 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, with both models supporting Apple’s ProMotion technology.
A20 Pro Chip Delivers More Power
One of the biggest upgrades is Apple’s new A20 Pro processor. Built using a 2-nanometer manufacturing process, the chip is designed to provide higher performance while improving efficiency.
The processor features a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU, along with dual 16-core Neural Engines for artificial intelligence workloads.
Apple says the new GPU can deliver up to 40 percent more performance than the previous generation, while the improved thermal system is designed to help the phone maintain high performance during demanding tasks.
These improvements should be particularly useful for gaming, video editing, photography and AI-powered features.
Variable Aperture Comes to the Main Camera
The camera system is arguably the most interesting upgrade on the iPhone 18 Pro.
The phone keeps a 48-megapixel main camera, but Apple has added a physical variable aperture system. Unlike a fixed aperture, the camera can change the opening of the lens depending on lighting and shooting conditions.
Users can select different aperture settings, including f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.
The wider settings are useful when more light is needed, while narrower settings can provide greater control over depth and detail. The camera can also adjust the aperture automatically.
Apple has expanded manual photography controls as well. Users can adjust settings such as ISO, white balance and shutter speed directly through the camera interface without relying on third-party apps.
The Pro models also retain 48-megapixel ultra-wide and telephoto camera capabilities, giving users more flexibility when shooting different types of photos.
Longer Battery Life
Battery performance is another major focus of the iPhone 18 Pro generation.
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro can provide up to 34 hours of video playback, while the larger Pro Max can reach up to 43 hours.
Both models support fast wired charging, with Apple claiming that the phones can reach around 50 percent battery capacity in approximately 15 minutes under supported conditions.
MagSafe wireless charging is also available, with support for charging speeds of up to 30W.
iPhone Duo Adds a Foldable Option
Alongside the traditional Pro models, Apple is also introducing the iPhone Duo, marking a significant change to the company’s smartphone lineup.
The foldable device reportedly features a 5.4-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal screen. When unfolded, users can run two applications side by side using Split View.
The Duo also uses the A20 Pro chip and runs iOS 27 with software designed around its flexible display.
Unlike the Pro models, the foldable phone uses Touch ID integrated into the side button.
Its camera system includes a 48-megapixel main sensor and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, with support for high-resolution video recording.
Price and Release Date
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the United States, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299. Both models are scheduled to become available on September 18, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
The iPhone Duo is expected to start at $1,999 and will arrive later, with availability scheduled for October 23.
